In Chase Elliott’s second appearance in The Clash at Daytona International Speedway, the No. 9 Mountain Dew driver led three times for a total of 17 laps before being collected in a multi-car accident on the final lap.
A random draw set the lineup for The Clash at Daytona International Speedway. As a result, Elliott and the No. 9 Mountain Dew team started 12th in the annual exhibition race at the 2.5-mile speedway.
On Lap 9, the 22-year- old driver started an inside lane and was able to charge his way up to second. The next lap, Elliott took over the lead for the first time in the 75-lap event.
After relinquishing the lead, the No. 9 team elected to come to pit road for right-side tires and fuel at Lap 24 just before a competition caution one lap later. The strategy allowed Elliott to restart second and the field immediately went three wide after taking the green flag once again.
The Dawsonville, Georgia, native chose the inside line with 33 laps remaining and slipped outside the top 10 as the field went single-file for the majority of the final laps.
With six laps to go, Elliott had worked his way back up to ninth and was looking for momentum to climb back toward the front.
On the final lap, Elliott’s No. 9 Mountain Dew Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was caught up in a multi-car incident that resulted in a 13th-place finish.
