From electric to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), connectivity to shared mobility, the automotive industry is undergoing a transformation expected to span the next 10-20+ years. The Shift to Electric
Increasingly, consumer, lawmaker, and auto manufacturer sentiment is moving toward electric and hybrid vehicles. General Motors, in particular, has announced its commitment to 30 new global electric vehicles by 2025 and says it’s all-in for an all-electric future. In addition, BAIC Motor plans to phase out gas engines from their lineup by 2025, VW has announced it will introduce its last ICE platform in 2026, and Toyota by 2040.
States have also joined the movement. Currently, 12 have adopted the ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicles) program requiring between 7-10% of all new cars sold in 2025 or after to be zero emissions. Colorado and Minnesota are expected to join that group by 2024. Washington and Pennsylvania, both LEV (Lower Emission Vehicle) states, have set declining emissions levels for cars and light trucks.
The electric vehicle category makes up 2% of the car parc today and is projected to grow to 10% by 2030, including full hybrids, PHEVs (Plug-In Hybrids), and BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). In general, electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and more expensive parts than the internal combustion engine (ICE).
As these technologies emerge, NAPA will be there with the parts these vehicles require as well as the training and tools needed to service and maintain them. NAPA Autotech Training already offers classes addressing these new vehicles and more are expected as this emerging technology develops and market penetration increases.
Large metropolitan areas including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago, are projected to have the largest number of EVs compared to less densely populated areas such as Wyoming and Iowa, for example.
