The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series were scheduled to complete another two-race weekend at Merced Speedway in Merced, CA, and Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA, on March 18 and 19. The Friday night show at Merced was completed as scheduled, however the weekend was cut short by persistent rain showers that cancelled the event at Ocean on Saturday.
Kicking off the night with Slick Woody’s Qualifying, Brad Sweet timed in 13th-quick in his NAPA AUTO PARTS No. 49. Starting fourth in the opening heat race, Sweet maneuvered his way to finish second behind fast qualifier and fellow Californian Giovanni Scelzi. The luck of the draw finally fell the NAPA driver’s way when he drew the pole of the Fast Pass Dash. He went on to win the hectic, six-lap shootout to earn the pole position for the 35-lap main event.
Sweet immediately jumped into the lead from his front row starting position. After pacing the field for the opening 13 laps, the caution flag waved, bunching the field back up. On the restart, the No. 49 bolted back into the lead and continued to maintain his advantage until the caution waved again with 14 laps remaining. The restart set up an all-out duel for the lead between Sweet and Carson Macedo as the pair traded slidejobs for the top spot in the final 10 laps. Macedo narrowly collected the win and Sweet finished second to earn yet another top-five finish, his sixth of the young season.
The World of Outlaws and Kasey Kahne Racing will conclude their west coast swing next weekend with a pair of showdowns at Bakersfield Speedway on Friday, March 25 and Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, March 26.
